Military history professor Bill Allison rates more Vietnam War movies, such as "Forrest Gump," for realism. Allison breaks down additional battlefield tactics used by the Viet Cong, or VC, and People's Army of Vietnam, or PAVN, during the Vietnam War, such as the ambush scene in "Forrest Gump" (1994), starring Tom Hanks, and the nighttime attacks of the Tet Offensive in "Full Metal Jacket" (1987). He covers the public perception of the Vietnam War in the United States, such as the war of attrition portrayed in "Hamburger Hill" (1987); the maltreatment of civilians in "Casualties of War" (1989), with Sean Penn and Michael J. Fox; and the overlap of the civil-rights movement with anti-war and anti-draft protests in "Da 5 Bloods" (2020), starring Chadwick Boseman. But the unique accounting standards that the industry has long relied on to make those calculations is anything but straightforward. “Hollywood accounting,” as a concept, is so specific to the entertainment business it has its own Wikipedia page. And while experts say this kind of creative accounting is perfectly legal, the tactics involve some of the most fantastical fictions ever devised in Tinseltown. To actually make the movie, the subsidiary inevitably takes on expenses — crew wages, craft services, set design, props etc. That means all of these “creative” expense allocations shouldn’t affect what net profits the studio’s shareholders see.

Opinion | Why America Desperately Needed Ted Lasso

NASHVILLE — I didn’t watch the first season of “Ted Lasso” until the second season was already underway on Apple TV+. I wish I’d been watching from the very beginning, when it first began streaming in 2020. It is simply the story of a heartbroken but optimistic American football coach who accepts a job as manager of a British football team in the hands of a heartbroken and pessimistic owner who has just won it in a bitter divorce. Rebecca Welton knows almost nothing about running a sports franchise, and her imported coach knows almost nothing about the game that Brits call football. “You know what the happiest animal in the world is?” Ted asks a glum player just bested in a team scrimmage.

THE MAKING OF ANOTHER MAJOR MOTION PICTURE MASTERPIECE, by Tom Hanks. Sidelined by the pandemic, some actors fired up ceramics or sang fragments of “Imagine.” Tom Hanks, one of the most prominent to contract an early case of Covid, bounced back by making a run at the Great American Novel. Alas, it is more Forrest Gump trotting from coast to coast than Sully landing on the Hudson. Titled “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece,” the book arrives at a crossroads for Hollywood. The novel also acknowledges a fading time when leading actors, even avatars of Everyman decency like the author, were royalty: their work shown not in living rooms but red-velvet-swagged “palaces.”

The "warm Vermont coat" that he wore to President Joe Biden's inauguration, he wrote, was the only coat he had in Washington. Sanders wrote that the photo created "a lot of smiles," but also allowed him to raise funds for organizations serving low-income Vermonters.

Despite building a career that spans more than 80 films and six Oscar nominations, the 66-year-old actor commented in a recent interview that only a handful of his movies are "pretty good." "No one knows how a movie is made, though everyone thinks they do," he told the magazine. "I've made a ton of movies — and four of them are pretty good, I think — and I'm still amazed at how films come together. Which four films he was referring to remains a mystery, but Hanks did give a clue in an interview last year. He listed 1992's "A League of Their Own", 2000's "Castaway" and 2012's "Cloud Atlas" as the three best experiences he had making movies.
New Delhi CNN —Movie theaters in Indian-controlled Kashmir have reopened their doors, more than two decades after they were forced shut during an armed rebellion that saw multiple threats and attacks on crowded public places. The lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, inaugurated the disputed region’s newest cinema on Tuesday, in a ceremony marked with much hype and fanfare. The movie theater will open to the public on September 30, according to businessman, Vijay Dhar, who has partnered with Indian cinema chain Inox Leisure Ltd., to open the theater in Srinagar. In the late 1980s, a violent insurgency in Indian-controlled Kashmir claimed the lives of more than 9,000 civilians according to the Indian government, though estimates vary. Last year, the government implemented a policy aimed to promote Indian-controlled Kashmir as a popular filming destination.
Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis’ reunion should be a source of curiosity, but their little puppet made of wood is in a movie that’s not so good. They build toward his encounter with the seafaring Monstro, upgraded to “sea monster” status, having maligned whales quite enough. It also largely squanders the vocal talents of the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Keegan-Michael Key as Jiminy Cricket and “Honest” John, respectively. While it’s perhaps unreasonable to expect a whole lot more from this sort of highly calculated leveraging of the studio’s library than a simple diversion for parents to share with kids, it’s not unreasonable to wish the live-action “Pinocchio” might have possessed a little more dimension than this. “Pinocchio” premieres September 8 on Disney+.
